How is AI impacting the post-MBA job market?

AI is making a lot of news lately, and not just for the right reasons. We have heard of a new term called 'AI washing', a term which indicates that AI is allegedly being used as an excuse by executives and CEOs of top tech firms to lay off employees. There are also numerous news articles on how AI is taking away entry level jobs and graduates are now struggling to be hired. All this begs a question — is an MBA even worth it now?

The answer we think is, yes! Because Artificial Intelligence is no longer a "future trend" — it's actively reshaping the MBA job market today. It is not replacing MBA jobs. It is instead replacing what those jobs require and how candidates are evaluated.

Employers are increasingly expecting MBA graduates to be comfortable using AI tools.

In 2024, 26% of employers valued AI skills in hiring.

In 2025, that jumped to 31% — one of the fastest-growing skill demands. That's a significant shift in just one year.

At the same time, over 50% of business schools now teach AI for decision-making and strategy. Hence AI literacy is becoming as fundamental as Excel or PowerPoint once was.

AI is also changing the nature of MBA roles by automating tasks, not entire roles. According to research:

  • AI is heavily impacting routine, repetitive, and analytical tasks
  • But strategy, leadership, and decision-making remain human-driven

For instance, in consulting, a sector largely driven by strong client relationships, MBA hires are still expected to lead client strategy and storytelling.

Within finance reporting activities may have been replaced, investment decisions are still driven by MBAs. Similarly for marketing professionals, who continue to lead brand positioning and strategy while outsourcing content drafts and visuals to AI.

It is however needless to say that entry level and junior roles are shrinking in some markets and which is why MBA hires are expected to come in AI literate and add value quicker than before.

And not all is doom and gloom, for AI is also creating new career paths and there is now greater demand for tech and business hybrid profiles and those that can take strategic decisions on AI adoption and scaling.

Counterintuitively, as AI grows, human skills matter more.

Top skills employers want:

  • Strategic thinking
  • Problem-solving
  • Communication
  • Leadership

An MBA is not just a course where you study specific subjects. Think of an MBA as a powerful tool that equips you with some of these critical skills — organisational behaviour, inter-cultural nuances, negotiations, softer skills, real life case studies to name a few.

The expectations of an MBA graduate now is that of AI literacy.

If you are planning an MBA, your strategy should focus on learning AI as a tool, building hybrid skills focusing on business, technology and communication, focusing on impact while targeting the right role.

Finally, AI is not reducing the value of an MBA — it's raising the bar and somewhat changing it as well.

The future belongs to candidates who can:

  • Use AI effectively
  • Think strategically
  • Lead in uncertain environments
